The trip to Steamboat Springs to play football hasn't always been the best of experiences for Delta High School. But this year's visit had positive results as the Panthers rolled up 368 yards of offense in a 49-0 drubbing over the Sailors.
Jonny Ponce returned to the starting lineup after suffering a badly bruised leg in a game played against Montrose on Sept. 4. Ponce rambled for 157 yards on just 12 carries and scored three touchdowns last Friday in Steamboat Springs.
Ponce's scores came on runs of 40, 18 and 17 yards.
Junior Kole Roberts was sharp with a 7-10 performance in the passing department resulting in 163 yards and three touchdowns. Junior Beau Byers caught three of Roberts' aerials for 79 yards and a touchdown. The first score of the game was a 58-yard scoring strike to Byers in the first quarter.
Kory Mills hauled in an 11-yard toss from Roberts for a score in the second quarter, and Tristan Brown was on the receiving end of a 12-yarder from Roberts for another score in the second frame.
A Braden Atchley 55-yard punt return for a score came in the first quarter, helping the Panthers put 21 points on the scoreboard in the first quarter.
The scores by Ponce, Mills and Brown in the second period added another 21 points after extra point kicks by A.B. Ontiveros.
A 42-0 lead prompted a running clock for the remainder of the game.
The only score in the second half of play came on Ponce's 17-yard run in the third quarter.
Sophomore Cam Schall and Brown shared Delta's tackling honors with six each, while Mills had five and sophomore Josh Reeder finished with four.
Schall was everywhere as he led the team in interceptions with two against the Sailors, and junior Andy Richards had one pilfer to his credit.
Ontiveros was good on all six of the PAT kicks.
The Panthers will have their hands full this week when they travel to Rifle to take on the second-ranked Class 3A Bears. Delta is sitting at the number 12 spot currently. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
