Saturday, May 12, is the 26th anniversary National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) annual nationwide food drive. The Stamp Out Hunger® Food Drive, the country's largest single-day food drive, provides residents with an easy way to donate food to those in need in the community.
Customers simply leave their donation of nonperishable food next to their mailbox before the delivery of the mail on Saturday, May 12. Letter carriers will collect these food donations on that day as they deliver mail along their postal routes and distribute them to the Delta Food Pantry. Pick up your mail from your PO box? No problem -- the Delta post office will have a food collection box inside where you may also donate food items. While all donations of nonperishable food items are welcome, the Delta Food Pantry is in need especially of cereal, boxed macaroni and cheese, canned fruit, canned soups, peanut butter and tuna.
In 2017, the community donated an amazing 3,500 pounds of food to the Delta Food Pantry during the Stamp Out Hunger drive! This year, volunteers at the food pantry are challenging the community to raise 5,000. If you are unable to donate food but would like to help your neighbors in need, please consider joining food pantry volunteers on May 12 to weigh, sort and shelve the food. Please call Mary at 970-275-9670 if you can help. You, your business, church or civic organization can also help by making a tax-deductible financial donation by mailing a check to PO Box 903, Delta CO 81416.
Hunger affects about 50 million people around the country, including millions of children, senior citizens and veterans. Pantry shelves filled up through winter-holiday generosity often are bare by late spring. And, with most school meal programs suspended during summer months, millions of children must find alternative sources of nutrition. Since the first national Food Drive in 1993, the Letter Carriers' Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive has collected more than 1.5 billion pounds of food; last year's drive brought in a record 80 million pounds of food.
This food drive is one way to help those in Delta who need assistance. Volunteer to staff, sort and distribute food are also needed on an ongoing basis. Or, a financial contribution may be mailed to The Delta Food Pantry, PO Box 903, Delta, CO 81416. The pantry is open weekdays 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. in the alley behind St. Michael's Catholic Church at 6th and Meeker.
On Tuesday, Sept. 11, the Delta County Board of Commissioners called a special meeting to consider the board's response to the Bureau of Land Management's preliminary Environmental Assessment (EA) concerning the lease parcels proposed for the December BLM sale.
Several people from the North Fork were present to provide input.
