An observance of the Missing Man Table was conducted on National POW/MIA Recognition Day, Friday, Sept. 16, at the Fireside Restaurant in Delta.
Members of Delta's Lee Marts VFW Post and Auxiliary #3571 explained that a permanent Missing Man Table has been established there with permission of restaurant owner Ernst Schopp.
There is poignant symbolism in each item of the Missing Man Table which signifies some aspect of the absent veteran's fate -- whether known or unknown. From the honor of his intentions to enter his country's service to present reminders of his absence, the ceremony is a solemn tribute to the sacrifice of those fallen, missing or imprisoned whose company their comrades-in-arms can no longer enjoy.
The local, district and state levels of the VFW organization were represented by four veterans who conducted the ceremony. All are members of the Lee Marts Post. Mike Stahly is currently serving on the Colorado Department (state) level as assistant chief of staff. Dave Rowland is currently the VFW District 11 commander. Ben Cole, senior vice commander of Post #3571, and Jim Baker, service officer for the post, served color guard.
Calling all volunteers! Fort Uncompahgre on the Old Spanish Trail has received six new tipis that will be used as outdoor classrooms in conjunction with the Nature Connection. John Hardy has volunteered to lead a group of folks who are willing to learn how to set up the tipis and pitch in where necessary.
