Preliminary budget released Monday

Release Monday of the county's preliminary budget for 2017 shows projected general fund spending of $11.1 million, up from $10.6 million estimated for 2016. The 2017 general fund amount includes $3.9 million from property tax receipts.
Big spending items foreseen in the general fund are the jail at $2 million, the sheriff's department at $2 million, and building and grounds at $796,312.
Elected county offices are projected to cost the following amounts: assessor $686,519; commissioners $497,042; clerk and recorder $480,383; coroner $181,090; district attorney county share $620,197; treasurer $253,784; and surveyor $5,721. County administration's budget for 2017 is $408,745.
Total expenditures in the road and bridge fund are shown at $5.6 million. According to the preliminary budget document, the county is anticipating $2.96 million in receipts from the gas (highway users) tax next year, up from $2.63 million expected this year.
Department budget request hearings are set to take place at the courthouse Oct. 25-27.
