Grand Mesa Gliders youth programs are dedicated to instructing kids in the various disciplines of Nordic skiing and backcountry safety as well as fostering a life-long enjoyment of skiing. The Gliders' mission is to make Nordic skiing available to all and fun!
Grand Mesa Nordic Council offers two programs. The Little Gliders cross-country ski program is for children ages 4-8. The program's emphasis is on having fun, playing games, and socializing with other children while developing the classic skiing technique. Children will be grouped by age and/or ability level. It's recommended all children use waxless classic ski equipment. If children do not have their own equipment, low-cost ski rentals are available through Skis for Kids.
This class meets Saturdays, Jan. 9, 16, 23 and 30. The fee is $40 for GMNC members, $55 for non-members.
The Gliders Nordic Program is for youth ages 9 to 16 years old. The program is designed for any level skier, from young skiers who want to learn how to cross-country ski to skiers who have the basic fundamentals and want to get ready for racing. Beginners will learn the classic skiing technique. Intermediate and advanced skiers will practice basic cross-country ski skills as well as skate skiing skills. Getting out on skis and having a good time will be the emphasis for all groups. Gliders will tour, train, play games, perform drills, race and improve. All skiers are required to have their own classic equipment (either waxable or waxless). If children do not have their own equipment, low-cost ski rentals are available through Skis for Kids.
This program meets from 10:30 to noon Saturdays, Jan. 9, 16, 23 and 30. The fee is $50 for GMNC members and $65 for non-members.
All classes are held at the Skyway trail system just off Highway 65. Feb. 6 is Gliders race and game day.
