Protect the Second Amendment

By Vic Ullrey

Dear Editor:

Why is there a Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution?

It is second only to the First Amendment that guarantees our right to free speech, freedom of religion, right of assembly, right to petition the government and freedom of the press. The Second Amendment tells us we have the right to defend ourselves. Self defense is a right given to us by nature. Nature has given most animals and even some plants a way to defend themselves. Because of the way civilizations have developed, people arm themselves to defend against their most lethal enemies, either a tyrannical government or other people who would do them harm. There are those who would want us to be defenseless.

President Obama's appointee to the Supreme Court, Merrick Garland, has shown himself to be an enemy of the Second Amendment in previous court actions and he should not be allowed to serve on the high court. Write or call your senators and let them know that Merrick Garland must be rejected as a Supreme Court justice.
