Raymond Werner

Raymond "Ray" H. Werner of Delta died Dec. 11, 2017, at San Juan Living Center in Montrose. He was 83.

No services are planned at this time.

He was born in Kimball, Neb., on May 21, 1934, to Herman and Anna (Huff) Werner. The family moved to Delta in 1937, and in 1952 he graduated from Delta High School, where he lettered in football, wrestling and track, and he was active in FFA. He attended Colorado A&M for two years but returned after his younger sister was injured in a car accident on Brickyard Hill. Mr. Werner then enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1955, serving as an engine man on the USS Toucan, a Auk-class minesweeper.

After his service, Mr. Werner worked as a fieldman for Southwest Production Credit Association in Delta and Montrose counties. He worked various jobs, eventually becoming the vice president of Skyland Food Corporation. He also farmed.

On Dec. 23, 1965, he married Mary Ficke of Joliet, Ill., in Albuquerque, N.M. They shared over 50 years of marriage.

Mr. Werner was a member of the National Food Processors Association, past president of Rocky Mountain Food Processors Association, served on the technical committee for the Processed Apple Institute, and belonged to the Western Colorado Horticultural Society.

He was a member of the Delta Elks Lodge, the Tri-County water board and the Colorado Water Conservation Board.

He enjoyed water skiing, snowmobiling, hunting, fishing, farming and being active in the Republican party.

Mr. Werner is survived by his wife, Mary; son, Scott (Jauna) Werner; and three grandchildren.
