Red Hat Dolls of the Valley celebrate Christmas

Queen Bee Betty Portman hosted a Christmas party for the Red Hat Dolls of the Valley on Thursday, Dec. 10, at the Hotchkiss Hightower Café. Festive ladies, dressed in red and purple finery, enjoyed a meal catered by Cary Hightower. The menu included turkey, dressing, mashed potatoes and cranberry sauce. For dessert there was a choice of decadent apple or chocolate strudel.

Yvonne Rubino played Santa's elf, handing out wrapped white elephant gifts. Entertainment was Christmas carols.

Present were Portman, Joyce Holybee, Joyce Chapdelaine, Jennette Habenicht, Carole McDaniel, Barbara Grosse-Rhode, Jean Flotho, Bobbie Selk, Claudia King and Julia Stark. Guests were Rubino and Elizabeth Chapdelaine.

Besides serving as queen for the Red Hats, Portman was recently selected as volunteer of the month at the Paonia Care Center. Honored for 14 years of service, she provided creative crafts for residents every Monday of the year. Sponsored by the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), Portman was instrumental in securing a large Colorado and United States flag to fly outside the Paonia Care Center.
