Cedaredge Elementary School is again offering its innovative summer school program called 'Cedaredge University' that will guide youth into areas of academic study in an atmosphere of making learning fun and interesting.
School Principal Daniel Renfrow said the name was chosen to help students begin early to visualize themselves in a future college career.
"We want to inspire them to keep learning," he said. "We wanted it to be interesting and looked at ways to enhance the summer programs. We wanted to make it entirely different to excite and captivate the students' imaginations."
According to the Cedaredge University website, "The point of our 'University' is to educate students in areas that are fun, fast-paced and interesting -- and to use reading to get there. We'd like this program to help our students (second through fifth grader next year) who need more reading practice and support."
There will be over a dozen individual course offering in arts, reading and writing, history and social studies, and science. The school's own teaching staff has stepped up and will serve as the university's "professors," teaching subjects that are part of their own academic passions.
"The staff will share their own passions for learning with kids," Renfrow said, adding that the academic programs are "reading driven," complemented with fun learning activities. Students can earn books to take home as their own.
The week-long summer school program runs June 12-16. There are four days of academic activities beginning at 9:30 a.m. each day and running until 1 p.m. The students will receive a lunch each day.
On the fifth day there will be a group half-day field trip to the top of Grand Mesa for some outdoor experiences and lunch.
There is no cost for the program, though the school will accept donations to offset costs.
Renfrow said there were 45 students enrolled in last year's Cedaredge University and that 55 to 60 are expected this year.
Information is available online and registration information is available at the school or by calling 970-856-3885.
