Delta resident Richard A. Smith died Thursday, Oct. 6, 2016, at the Hospice Care Center in Grand Junction. He was 72.
Rosary was said Tuesday, Oct. 11, followed by Mass of Christian burial at Taylor Funeral Service Chapel in Delta. Burial followed at Olathe Cemetery.
Mr. Smith was born in Baltimore, Md., Nov. 2, 1943, to Andrew and Jean (Rutkowski) Smith. He spent his childhood in Maryland. He attended Mt. St. Joseph Catholic School, graduating in 1961.
On Oct. 20, 2006, he married Suzanne Gonzales in Annapolis, Md. The couple moved to Delta in 2013.
Mr. Smith was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Olathe. He enjoyed building cars, woodworking, electrical work, plumbing, welding and cooking.
He is survived by his wife, Susan Smith of Delta; two sons, Mark Smith and Brian Smith, both of Maryland; a sister, Jean Smith of Maryland; and six grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents.

On Dec. 4 Delta County Commissioners Doug Atchley, Mark Roeber and Don Suppes denied the application of Paonia Holdings, LLC for a change of land use for the property at 41322 Highway 133, with an adjacent residence at 41402 Highway 133 and an ancillary property at 16180 Stevens Gulch Road.
The property is owned by Bowie Resources, LLC, and was formerly used as a coal load-out site.
