Ricky "Rick" Lee Thomas of Paonia died Tuesday, Oct. 6, 2015, at HopeWest Hospice in Grand Junction. He was 64.
He was born in Springfield, Mo., Aug. 22, 1951, to Helen and Kelly Thomas. He grew up in Lakewood where he graduated from Lakewood High School. After graduating from Western State College, he worked as an environmental scientist.
He married Patty Murphy of Paonia in the summer of 1983.
He enjoyed spending summers at Taylor Park, where he built a cabin, throwing horseshoes, playing volleyball, sitting in the hot tub under the stars, or sitting around a campfire talking with friends. He also enjoyed snowmobiling, hunting, fishing, making log furniture and remaking things including a 1968 Mustang and an old hot tub.
Mr. Thomas is survived by his wife, Patty; son, Josh Thomas of Lakewood; daughter, Cailey (Josh) Walker of Tulsa, Okla.; his mother, Helen Thomas of Lakewood; sister, Lynette of Arvada; brother, Kevin of Arlington, Texas; a grandson, Jackson; and extended family.
The family is planning a memorial to be held at the cabin next summer.
At about 9:50 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 14, officers of the Delta Police Department were dispatched to a robbery reported at Arby's, located at 107 Gunnison River Drive. An extensive search of the area was conducted and the suspect was not located.
The suspect was reported to have walked into Arby's and after a brief conversation with an employee, was able to leave the store with a small amount of cash and coins.
