Al and Marty Rozman will celebrate their 55th wedding anniversary on Nov. 25.
High School sweethearts, the couple were married at Paonia during Thanksgiving vacation; both were attending Western State College at Gunnison for their freshman year. The people of Somerset provided an awesome wedding reception at the former local school gymnasium with a local band of fellow classmates including Bob Sunich and John Maurale on accordion and Janet Wianko on piano playing Slovenian polkas and waltzes. Many Slovenian ladies pitched in to provide ham, povititca, salads and drinks. The majority of the coal miner families from Somerset and many people from Paonia (including some of their former high school teachers) lavished the young 18-year-old couple with several long tables of wedding gifts including kitchen appliances, tableware, bedding, bath, and numerous items which the couple utilized throughout the next 20+ years. The honeymoon was an overnight stay in a local hotel at Delta and then they traveled back to WSC for final exams.
Al and Marty put themselves through five years of college (which included graduate school and a teaching degree for Al and a medical technology degree/certification for Marty).
Marty worked as a med tech at Gunnison and Fort Collins and subsequently focused on raising two boys, Curtis and David, and a girl, Robin. The family resided in Gunnison, Phoenix, Fort Collins, Loveland, Minnesota, Arapahoe County, and finally came back to Paonia in 1977.
Both were passionately involved in leadership roles with evangelical churches, Bible studies, youth ministries and hospitality ministries for Christian pastors and missionaries over the latter 35 years of their married life.
Currently they live on Pitkin Mesa in Paonia and credit their continual years together as involving a "three-strand cord" which includes Jesus Christ in the center of their marriage, life and ministry.
On Friday, Feb. 10, Stephen Felix, a 52-year-old male from Olathe, was brought to Montrose Memorial Hospital by the Olathe Ambulance in an unconscious state. Radiologic examination revealed traumatic injuries and an acute subarachnoid hemorrhage over his brain.
