Saturday 5k got AppleFest off to a running start

The excitement started early on Saturday at AppleFest as the annual 5k AppleFest Fitness Run/Walk left the starting line promptly on time at 7:30 a.m.

Runners and walkers made their ways along a course designed, appropriately, to provide a flavor of the apple orchards surrounding Cedaredge.

There were 149 registered participants in this year's AppleFest 5k Fitness run walk, according to event organizers.

Crossing the finish line first this year was Carl Wicklund with a time of 22:26. The Wicklund family's success in the event proved that the family which runs together has fun together as Carl's wife, Lauren, was the first finisher among the female runners in the event.

Second to cross the finish line in this year's event was Logan Harrington in 23:39. Third-place finisher was Justin Smith in 25:58.

The 5k is a fundraiser for local Boy Scout Troop 482. A long lineup of sponsors helped with the event, one of which donated an appetizing table full of bagels for finishers to restock their carbs energy stores following the run/walk.

Participants received recognition and unique medallions that commemorated their personal success and achievement.
