Schwieterman, Paonia girls second at Sweitzer

Katya Schwieterman and Brooke Hillman led the Paonia cross country team to a second-place finish Saturday at the Delta Sweitzer Lake Invitational cross country meet. Schwieterman pulled out all the stops with a second-place time of 20 minutes, 44.65 seconds, topping her former personal best performance run a week earlier at the Anna Banana memorial race in Fruita.

Hillman placed sixth out of 58 racers with a time of 21:21.90.

Paonia entered five in the race. Alex Eaton placed 16th with a time of 22:45.33 and Jordan Evans set a new personal best time of 23:04.58 to place 18th. Freshman Abby Reedy also set a new personal record of 23:51.84 to place 29th. The girls team scored 53 points.

This is the third year the Sweitzer meet was held.

Central High School's Ivory Espinoza won the girls' division with a new course record time of 19:13.04.

Caden Meilner led the Paonia boys with a ninth-place time of 17 minutes, 30.45 seconds. Logan Green ran a personal best time of 18:38.13 to place 25th, and Elijah Evans placed 26th with a PR of 18:38.77. Ben O'Rourke scored 35 points with a time of 19:42.11.

Also setting new personal records were Hunter Norris, whose time of 21:34.33 was good for 45 points, and Michael Hofmann, who scored 48 points with a new personal best time of 22:23.36.

The boys placed sixth overall with 137 points.

The course record of 16:23.05, set in 2015 by Jack Plantz of Telluride, was re-set by Telluride's Jaden Evans with a time of 16:13.27.
