Scott Mills

Neal "Scott" Mills died in a motorcycle accident Monday, March 14, 2016. He was 51.

He was born in Phoenix, Ariz., Dec. 8, 1964, to Neal and Susan (Pew) Mills. When he was 8 years old, the family moved to Montrose where he raised 4-H steers, played baseball and participated in the High School Rodeo Association as a bronc rider. He graduated from Montrose High School in 1983 and served as an electrical lineman in the U.S. Air Force for six years. After he was honorably discharged, he moved to Los Alamos, N.M., to work in the family jewelry business.

Mr. Mills attended the police academy in Santa Fe, N.M., and worked for the Los Alamos Police Department for 16 years. In 2010 he moved to Albuquerque, N.M., to work in law enforcement and in 2012 he returned to Los Alamos as a lieutenant. He retired from the Los Alamos Police Department in 2013 as a commander and moved to Ouray, where he became a patrol sergeant for the Ouray Police Department.

He married Sandy Mills on Feb. 14, 2016.

He was a member of the Episcopal church and the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks. He was a Master Mason, a photographer and an outdoorsman. He enjoyed playing the bagpipes.

Mr. Mills is survived by his wife, Sandy Mills of Ouray; his son, Ryan (Nikole) Mills and their children Keona and Tyler of Priest River, Idaho; Sandy's children, Harlan Watkins and Jessica (Lane) Varner and grandson Reece Varner, all of Delta; his parents, Neil and Susy Mills of Tucson, Ariz.; his sister, Amy Patterson of New Mexico; his in-laws, Harlan and Sharon Bingham of Olathe; his sister-in-law, Tina (Bart) Greenhalgh of Olathe; and extended family.

A funeral service was held Tuesday, March 22, with a police motorcade from Sunset Mesa Funeral Directors to Grace Community Church in Montrose. Interment with military honors followed at Grand View Cemetery in Montrose.
