Fred Houghton IV
UPDATE Aug. 31 -- Fred Houghton IV, 29, of Cedaredge successfully eluded law enforcement officers in Delta County for days. His luck run out in Utah on Wednesday, Aug. 30. The St. George News reports that Utah Highway Patrol trooper and other police agencies in Iron County engaged in two separate high speed chases that turned out to be connected, as both drivers knew each other and were wanted on multiple warrants out of Colorado.
Delta County Sheriff Fred McKee says the man arrested with Houghton was Nicholas Pell, who is wanted locally on traffic violations and failure to appear on a felony warrant.
McKee said the two men will be extradited when the Utah judicial system is through with them, "which will probably not be soon."
Due to the pursuit, schools in Parowan were placed in lockdown. On Aug. 23, four Delta schools were told to shelter in place or placed in lockdown while authorities did a door-to-door canvass for Houghton on Garnet Mesa.
Two felony warrants have been issued for Fred Houghton IV, 29, of Cedaredge, the subject of an extensive search on Garnet Mesa last week. Students at Garnet Mesa Elementary, Lincoln Elementary, Vision Charter Academy and Delta High School were placed in lockdown or asked to shelter in place for most of the day Wednesday.
Despite a door-to-door canvass of B Road and surrounding area, Houghton was not located.
The sheriff's office also investigated sightings at the Cedaredge-area home of a relative, and at a camper on 1600 Road that appeared to have been slept in. No evidence was found to directly tie Houghton to either incident and he remains at large.
Houghton is described as a Caucasian male, 6'1" tall, about 185 pounds with short brown hair and hazel eyes. Delta County Sheriff Fred McKee said Houghton is a registered sex offender with a "very, very lengthy" record with local law enforcement. He should be considered armed and dangerous. Anyone with information on Houghton's location is encouraged to call dispatch at 970-874-2015 or 9-1-1 immediately.
The incident began the morning of Aug. 23, when Houghton was involved in a motor vehicle accident on 1600 Road, outside the city limits. He contacted a friend to pick him up, but was spotted by the Colorado State Patrol leaving the scene. The trooper turned around and attempted to contact the vehicle carrying Houghton. Contact was made with the vehicle with the assistance of the Delta Police Department. At that time, Houghton exited the vehicle and fled on foot.
When he was last seen, Houghton was wearing a long sleeve green shirt, blue jeans, a black hat and sunglasses with no shoes.
Sheriff McKee said in addition to the warrants for his arrest, Houghton is facing additional charges including felon in possession of a firearm and possession of methamphetamine.
