After suffering through a cold shooting night against Delta the previous day, Paonia's Eagles bounced back in the First Colorado National Bank's consolation game for a 60-43 win on Saturday. Paonia scored just 30 points against Delta in Friday night's opener. Enoch Kropp held his own offensively against the Panthers with 16 points and tallied 15 counters against the Bulldogs on Saturday to lead the Eagles scoring attack both days.
Hotchkiss' Braxton Trujillo began Saturday's play with two long-range shots for six points in the first quarter. Trujillo scored 26, in a losing cause, against Cedaredge on Friday. Braxton had seven three-pointers in that game.
Saturday's game was evenly played between the Bulldogs and Eagles. Kropp began his day with a pair of three-pointers for the Eagles and Paonia managed to come away with a two-point lead after one period of action.
Slater Podgorny's five points helped keep Paonia in front of the Bulldogs as the Eagles increased their lead by one in a 14-13 second quarter.
The game's complexion changed after halftime with Paonia doubling the Bulldogs' score on a 14-7 run. Trujillo was the leading scorer for Hotchkiss with his three-for-three shooting at the free throw line. Paonia's Sean Devlin sparked an Eagles' run with two three-pointers in the third quarter and Paonia led 42-32 with one period left to play.
Hotchkiss was stuck on the number seven in the fourth quarter and Trujillo's third shot from beyond the arc wasn't enough to close the gap after an 18-7 Eagles' run.Kropp's seven points in the final stanza led the way with Caden Meilner adding five and Slater another four points in the Paonia run.
Kropp finished the game with 15 points to lead Paonia's offense. Meilner was next high for the Eagles with 10 points and Slater and Devlin scored nine points each.
Trujillo was the only Hotchkiss player in double figures with his 18 points.
