Senior CommUnity meals aims to raise $10,000

Senior CommUnity Meals, a program of Volunteers of America, invites Coloradans to support its efforts to combat senior hunger by donating to the program on Colorado Gives Day, Dec. 8.
Presented by Community First Foundation and FirstBank, Colorado Gives Day is an annual statewide movement to celebrate and increase philanthropy through online giving. The event is powered by ColoradoGives.org, a year-round, online giving website. Safe and secure donations can be made in a few easy steps and are accepted at any time.
"The donations we receive on Colorado Gives Day will help us do more to ensure seniors in our area receive good nutrition. There are many older adults who go without food because of income, mobility or other reasons," said Al Shonk, Senior CommUnity Meals program director. "Our goal is to raise $10,000 this year, which would go towards feeding more homebound seniors with meal delivery and by feeding more seniors at our seven community dining sites. We also wish to be included in the $1 Million Incentive Fund to increase the amount of donations we can receive. We are grateful for the opportunity to potentially receive matching funding for our program."
The Incentive Fund is one of the largest gives-day incentive funds in the country. Community First Foundation and FirstBank each contributed $500,000 to create a $1 million fund. Every nonprofit receiving a donation on Colorado Gives Day receives a portion of the fund, which increases the value of every dollar donated. For example, if Senior CommUnity
Meals receives 10 percent of the total donations made on Colorado Gives Day, it will also receive 10 percent of the $1 Million Incentive Fund.

Unity Meals is assembling emergency "blizzard boxes" to distribute to their clients in December.
"In past years we have provided these boxes during the harsh winter months in the event we were not able to deliver or otherwise provide meals at the meal sites due to severe weather conditions. The boxes are filled with non-perishable food items and will contain enough food for six meals," Shonk said.
Products like individual cans of chili, spaghetti, ravioli, tuna, fruit cups, individual juice boxes, packs of peanuts, sunflower seeds and crackers are some of the items sought to fill the boxes.
Over the past year, approximately 75,000 hot and frozen meals have been provided through Senior CommUnity Meals to the senior citizens of Delta, Montrose and San Miguel counties.
Community First Foundation, an Arvada-based foundation dedicated to fueling the power of community to drive positive change, and FirstBank, Colorado's largest locally owned bank, have partnered to present Colorado Gives Day for the past six years. By making fundraising simple for nonprofits and giving easy for donors, Colorado Gives Day is one the most successful events of its kind in the nation. Last year, $26.2 million was raised for Colorado nonprofits in just 24 hours. Since its inception in 2010, $83 million has been donated on Colorado Gives Day.
