Shirley Rae Dixon McDaniel died Thursday, Aug. 18, 2016, at her home in Cortez.
She was born in Delta Sept. 2, 1935, to Charles and Vernice (Pratt) Dixon.
In 1955 she married Harlan Lee McDaniel. They moved to Cortez in 1960. Mrs. McDaniel worked as a secretary for the Montezuma-Cortez School District from 1964 to 1997.
She enjoyed raising and showing dogs in competitions, a passion she passed on to her children. In her retirement, she enjoyed researching family genealogy, doing word search puzzles and reading.
She is survived by two sons, Lance of Cortez and Kent (Marie) of Thornton; a daughter, Sherilyn of Cortez; granddaughters, Megan of Phoenix, Ariz., and Cayla of Thornton; a great-granddaughter, Marley of Thornton; siblings Sharon (Robert) Wear, Kenneth (Judi) Dixon, Lawrence Dixon and Janice (Curtis) Jones.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Harlan "Mac" McDaniel, in 2012.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, Sept. 3, from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Cortez Recreation Center.

On Dec. 4 Delta County Commissioners Doug Atchley, Mark Roeber and Don Suppes denied the application of Paonia Holdings, LLC for a change of land use for the property at 41322 Highway 133, with an adjacent residence at 41402 Highway 133 and an ancillary property at 16180 Stevens Gulch Road.
The property is owned by Bowie Resources, LLC, and was formerly used as a coal load-out site.
