Cedaredge Elementary School continues to reach out to its students long into the school year, even after the typical learning hours have ended. A new after-school program allows young students to further their studies after hours at CES.
The program runs Monday through Thursday for approximately 45 minutes after school. Ten teachers work each day, tutoring students and making sure they use the extra time to their best advantage. CES principal Daniel Renfrow oversees the after-school operations. "It's a big program for us, for sure," he states. "We have exactly 100 students participating, which is a little under a third of the school."
The after-school program presents students with multiple benefits, including snacks, entertainment, and most importantly, help with homework. Many students use online lessons for assistance with Go Math, the school's newly-implemented core math curriculum. Other students seek tutoring from teachers or simply use the time to complete homework. "It's really a great way to make teaching the kids more efficient and effective. It's a little more instruction in an area where they need help."
The program helps parents with jobs who need a little extra time to pick up their students. Older siblings from the high school, which is dismissed at 3:30, also have more time to pick up their younger brothers or sisters. Renfrow stresses the success and importance of the program. "Our goal is to touch as many students' lives as possible, and this is really a great way to reach out to them." He plans to analyze data from the program at the end of the school year to determine how to improve it in the years to come. "It's something that we're very proud of, but there's always room for improvement." Until then, students enjoy the extra time that allows them to connect with their teachers, further their education, and prepare for their futures.
