Surface Creek activities to close out August | Cedaredge

The owner of this nicely done, metallic green '57 Chevy brought his pride ride from Montrose to Cedaredge for a Cruise Night held earlier this summer. Another Cruise Night is scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 18, from 5 to 8 p.m. on Main Street.

A number of special events in Surface Creek Valley will close out the final two weeks of August and usher in the annual late summer and autumn months of grand western Colorado weather.

On Thursday, Aug. 18, from 5 to 8 p.m. another in the summer series of Cruise Nights is being hosted by members of the Lugnuts Car Club of Cedaredge. Club members and others are invited to drive their project vehicles around town. Members explain that it is an occasion for public display of the local pride rides and is also intended to serve as an "economic development" boost to local businesses.

The annual Orchard City Town Picnic is scheduled this Saturday, Aug. 20, at the Orchard City Park pavilion, beginning at 11 a.m. The event includes a free community cookout, a water feature for kids, a watermelon eating contest and a pie baking contest.

Cedaredge will hold its annual community potluck Party in the Park on Saturday, Aug. 27, beginning at 5 p.m. in its Town Park. Various styles of barbecue ribs will be provided by the Kerns family, professionals in the art of barbecue catering. Attendees are encouraged to add their favorite summer dish to the potluck array that is set out on tables in the park. There will be a live music performance by RARE.

The roster of special late summer and autumn events extends into September with the 10th annual Pops in the Park concert presented by the Valley Symphony Orchestra and Chorus on Sept. 10 in Cedaredge Town Park. The Chamber of Commerce has asked members and community members to volunteer and provide a light meal for the performers prior to the concert event. The musicians volunteer their time and travel expenses to perform in Cedaredge Town Park from 5-7 p.m. Also, the symphony association has traditionally hosted a homemade pie and ice cream social for the audience during intermission as a fundraiser.

The Cedaredge Rotary Club will stage a fundraiser on Sunday, Sept. 11, at RJ's Steakhouse from 2 to 4 p.m. There will be music by Ray Carpenter for the event, which benefits community grants and Cedaredge High School scholarships.

On Sept. 13, the Colorado Grand Auto Tour will make a stop in Cedaredge and will display some of the cars along Main Street. Participants will make an extensive stop in Paonia also. According to the tour website, "The event is run with the cooperation of the Colorado State Patrol and in towns where we have lunch, such as Lake City, Walden, Paonia, Salida, Ridgway, Hotchkiss and Meeker, spectators are invited to see the cars and meet their owners. This year's event is scheduled for Sept 12-17. Admission is free for the "Concours d'Non Elegance."
