Hotchkiss resident Tammy Smith recently received the McGuffey Award from the Colorado Association of School Boards (CASB). This longtime CASB award honors committed school board members who make a difference and bring passion to their work. Most important, they improve the lives of children in their district.

Smith is starting her eighth year on the Delta County School Board of Education.

"Tammy has a huge heart and cares deeply for the students, staff and the five different communities within Delta County," said superintendent Caryn Gibson. "Tammy has a clear vision that matches the district's motto of 'Caring, Challenging, Learning ... Every Student, Every Day!'

"She is transparent and not afraid to stand up for what she believes in, but she is also a good team member and collaborator. Tammy makes it a point to be a frequent visitor to all of the schools in the district. She currently is the school board president who leads with confidence and passion while guiding Delta County School District 50J."

Smith was recognized at the CASB's fall regional meeting held in Montrose Sept. 27.
