Tax exemption should be transferable

I'm responding to your article (Feb. 15) "Seniors, disabled vets eligible for property tax exemption." One problem -- even if you have lived in and owned your home for 10 years you can NOT transfer that exemption to a new or different home. Many of us after retirement choose to downsize; however if you leave that home you raised your kids in for a more appropriately-sized home, you lose your senior or vet exemption -- even if you move only a few miles away still being in the same county and still in Colorado.
I emailed State Senator Kerry Donovan explaining the situation. I received a return email with the following statement from Senator Donovan: "We are examining the senior property tax exemption this session and I will share your specific issue with the Joint Budget Committee." An amendment allowing a tax exemption transfer should have zero impact and may in fact encourage more seniors and vets not to leave the state for places with better tax advantages.
I would encourage anyone considering downsizing and staying in the area to contact Senator Donovan or any other legislators to change this void in the state constitution regarding property taxes. Email the senator at firstname.lastname@example.org. Seniors and disabled vets tax exemption should be transferable!
