Three named to zoning board

At the Nov. 10 regular meeting, trustees appointed Alexis Halbert, Dave Knutson and James C. Normandin to Paonia's zoning board of adjustment, leaving one seat vacant. The appointments mean that the board will now have a quorum and the ability to address variance requests. The town has held on to one variance request for two months, said town manager Jane Berry. The board of adjustments will meet at 10 a.m. Friday, Nov. 20, at town hall to address that variance request, for a covered porch located on residential property.

Applicants were not required to attend the meeting, causing trustees Dave Bradford and Susanne Watson to express concern over missed opportunities to meet them and ask questions. Bradford asked that in the future, applicants be asked to attend the meeting when a vote is being considered. The three appointments were approved on a 5-1 vote, with Watson casting the dissenting vote.

Trustees also approved a liquor license renewal for the Blue Sage Center for the Arts.

A change order was approved on the Alpine C.M. contract for improvements at the upper Lamborn Mesa Water Treatment Plant, allowing for an additional 30 days to complete the project. The new completion date is Dec. 18.

Trustees also voted to award the contract for construction of a water tank staircase at the lower (Clock) water treatment plant to PNCI Construction, Inc., of Grand Junction, in the amount of $11,670. Eagle Welding in Paonia, which designed the staircase, submitted a bid of $12,475. While the town prefers to work with local companies, Eagle Welding was unable to complete the work by year-end, which is necessary for the town to close out the project and bring the one million-gallon tank back online before 2016.
