Last week, the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment and the Delta County Health Department recognized Delta County Memorial Hospital for creating a tobacco-free campus.

Dr. Larry Wolk, executive director and chief medical officer of the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, applauded the hospital's commitment to the health and safety of its employees, patients, vendors and visitors by prohibiting the use of any and all tobacco products and electronic smoking devices in or on hospital property.

"Tobacco-free policies not only protect everyone at your hospital from the dangerous health effects of secondhand smoke or vapor, they have been proven to help smokers smoke less or even quit for good," Dr. Wolk noted in a letter of appreciation.

"We want to thank you for your leadership in creating a smoke-free campus at Delta County Memorial Hospital. Your action sets an example for other institutions across Colorado. Together, we can work to reduce tobacco use and help make Colorado the healthiest state in the nation."

Karen O'Brien and Jolyne Young of the Delta County Health Department read the letter and presented a plaque to hospital staff last week.

The plaque states: "We applaud Delta County Memorial Hospital for its progressive leadership and outstanding foresight in implementing a comprehensive tobacco-free campus policy."

The hospital is also offering a tobacco cessation program for employees and community members. More information is available by calling 874-2412.
