Tom Onis Carroll of Delta died Dec. 7, 2016, at Crossroads Assisted Living Center in Delta. He was 92.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 16, at Taylor Funeral Service Chapel in Delta. Interment will follow at Mesa View Cemetery.
Mr. Carroll was born in Bixby, Okla., March 13, 1924, to Thomas and Emma (Spurgeon) Carroll. He spent his childhood and attended school in Glenpool, Okla.
He was a decorated World War II veteran who served in infantry combat and was part of the invasion of Okinawa. After being wounded he went to Guam and Saipan, subsequently rejoining forces in Mindora on the Philippine Islands.
On Feb. 19, 1949, he married Elsie Frank in Fort Smith, Ark. He worked with the Corps of Engineers, which took his family to locations in Oklahoma, New Mexico, Arkansas and Texas. He also worked in upstate New York for several months.
He volunteered for several years with PUSH, an organization supplying food, toys and warm clothing to those in need during the holidays. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge for over 45 years. As a member of the transportation team for Hella Shrine, he frequently took crippled, burned and disabled children across the state of Texas and surrounding states for care.
He enjoyed hunting, gardening, the outdoors and traveling in his motorhome.
He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Lucille Carroll; three daughters, Cathy Carroll (Don Johnson), Lisa Carroll (Steve Erickson) and Beth Rogers; one sister, Maggie Wolf; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild, Robert FitzGerald.
He was preceded in death by two brothers and four sisters.
