The Women's Surface Creek Saddle Club is conducting its biennial Trail Trials at the Mesa Top Trail on Sept. 12. This popular local trail riding event will be held at the Mesa Top Trail head on Grand Mesa.
This ride will be an eight-mile loop, with the majority of the track on the scenic Mesa Top Trail with spectacular views of the Granby and Battlement Reservoirs. Hopefully, the aspen trees will be starting to turn their beautiful fall colors.
At least 10 obstacles are planned to challenge participants this year as they ride along. Horse and rider skill levels have improved tremendously since the Women's Saddle Club began holding this event back in 2002 at the Escalante exit off of Highway 50 north of Delta.
The majority of the obstacles will be natural situations one might encounter during a high forest trail ride. All riders are invited to try all the obstacles, but if they encounter something they would rather not ask their horse to do, they can simply skip it.
Riders may start on the trail in a two hour window between 9-11 a.m. The pace is as fast or as slow as riders feel comfortable. Having fun, enjoying a beautiful fall day on Grand Mesa and riding safely are the main goals for the day.
The Women's Surface Creek Saddle Club encourages the entire family to come out and ride together by giving large discounts to family's riding together as well as discounts if you register and pay in advance. So if you are looking for something fun to do on horseback, grab a friend and come on up and give Trail Trials a try. Mules are welcome too.
