Paonia High School alumna Ashley Vanvleet, a sophomore member of the Idaho State University Bengals track team, won her first title of the season. Vanvleet scored 3,413 points to win the pentathlon at the Snake River Open, held Jan. 12 and 13 in Pocatello, Idaho.
According to an article on the ISU Bengals website, Vanvleet scored in high jump and shot put "with marks of 5-3.75" and 36'0.25" respectively, and finished second in the long jump and third in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 9.84 seconds. She also completed the 800-meter run in 2:30. Her long jump mark of 17-2.25" "is a personal best by almost 18 inches," according to Bengals coach Hillary Merkley.
Vanvleet, a 2016 graduate of PHS, medaled at state in multiple individual and relay events.
Her sister, freshman Brianna Vanvleet, cleared 17'3.75 to win the long jump, and placed fourth overall in the women's pentathlon with a score of 2,985.
Brianna is a 2017 graduate of PHS. She holds the 2A state record in the long jump.
