Lee Marts VFW Post 3571 of Delta is teaming up with the Colorado Aviation Business Association's (CABA) holiday airlift and the local Dollar Tree in Delta to assist needy and homeless veterans and their families in the area.
This will be the fourth year that the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States has worked with CABA to distribute food and toys to needy veterans. CABA-affiliated businesses collect non-perishable food and toys throughout the state and, using donated aircraft and student pilots from the Metro State aviation program, airlift these goods to locations throughout the state of Colorado. Members of VFW posts in Delta and Montrose work together to help distribute an aircraft full of items airlifted into the Montrose airport.
These airlifted items are then added to the locally donated items the VFW members have collected, packaged into individual and family boxes and distributed to needy or homeless veterans and their families in Delta and Montrose.
Last year, Dollar Tree in Delta graciously offered to serve as a collection point for the project. The hundreds of pounds of non-perishable food and toys collected locally and received through the CABA holiday airlift provided 17 packages for locally needy veterans and their families, with additional special packages made available to homeless vets in the area with the assistance of The Abraham Connection.
The generosity of the people of the Delta community and the CABA-associated businesses with the help of the staff at Dollar Tree in Delta and The Abraham Connection has in the past and can again this year help members of VFW Post 3571 and its Auxiliary to help veterans who need "a little boost" around the holiday season.
A donation box will be available at Dollar Tree from Nov. 2 through the first week of December. The CABA airlift is scheduled to arrive in Montrose early in December, then all donated items will be sorted, packaged and distributed by members of the VFW and Auxiliary in Delta.
