VFW recognizes award-winning student writers

Six award-winning student writers of patriotic essays, including four from Delta County, have been recognized for their talent and effort as VFW District 11 winners in the high school Voice of Democracy and the middle school Patriot's Pen essay contests.

Lee Marts Veterans of Foreign Wars Post and Auxiliary #3571 of Delta hosted the District 11 meeting on Feb. 14 where the students' awards were presented.

Brenna Rhiness of Delta High School placed first in the district Voice of Democracy competition.

Courtney Van Vleet of Paonia took second place.

Third place in the high school division went to Kelli De Crow of Fruita.

In the middle school Patriot's Pen competition, VFW District 11 had a winner whose composition also took the state competition. Zach Shettler of Grand Junction will have his district- and state-winning essay go on to national level competition.

Second place in the middle school division went to Katie Lindley of Cedaredge.

Third place went to Carisa Rhiness of Delta Middle School.
