Philip Scheetz, a senior at the Vision Charter Academy, was recently named one of the top 10 Colorado photographers publishing on Instagram.
"Psst ... 10 Colorado instagrammers you simply must follow" was posted on Denver Ear, a metro-based website that rounds up events, business and places of interest to residents and visitors.
On the website, Scheetz is described as a 16-year-old emerging photographer who uses a Nikon D750 to capture breathtaking images of Colorado nature.
Photography is just one of the "cool" classes Philip has taken in addition to the core subjects offered by VCA. He learned the basics from Jennifer Loshaw in Montrose, then studied online videos and websites.
Philip has embraced Vision's individualized learning approach and has loaded up on computer courses. As a sophomore, he earned Computer Technology Industry Association (CompTIA) A+ certification.
With his computer background, he has a special interest in applying software such as Adobe Lightroom to his digital photos. He says he doesn't add things that weren't in the shot to begin with, but Lightroom is a valuable tool for enhancing color, exposure, tone and contrast.
By posting his photos on Instagram, an online mobile photo sharing and social networking app, Philip has gained broader exposure and the opportunity to interact with other photographers. His photos are linked to his website, www.philipscheetzphoto.com, where they can be purchased in a variety of sizes and materials such as photo paper, canvas and metal. Philip says his favorite is metal, because images infused into aluminum are vibrantly colored and amazingly detailed. The metal frames are mounted off the wall, giving the photo the appearance of floating.
Philip has been developing his business acumen along with his photography and computer skills, as he created his website, developed an online shopping cart, and is now marketing prints and a 2017 calendar that features Western Slope scenery.
He's also been doing some special event photography in his hometown of Montrose and is interning with Tim Frates Laser Engraving and Custom Framing to round out his understanding of mattes and frames.
Philip believes his professional future lies in computer science or cybersecurity, but said he wouldn't turn down a job that gave him the opportunity to travel the world taking photos.
The busy senior is getting a taste of college life by taking classes at the Montrose Campus of Colorado Mesa University. Because he's just 16, he plans to take a year off before enrolling in college full-time.
Philip is the son of Tammi and Jeff Scheetz. He has a younger brother, Ryan, who is also enrolled in VCA.
On Tuesday, Sept. 11, the Delta County Board of Commissioners called a special meeting to consider the board's response to the Bureau of Land Management's preliminary Environmental Assessment (EA) concerning the lease parcels proposed for the December BLM sale.
Several people from the North Fork were present to provide input.
