Volunteers needed Saturday

By Tamie Meck

Volunteers are being sought to help this Saturday with cleanup efforts on a section of the 'dobies on Bureau of Land Management lands between Paonia and Crawford. Paonia resident Erin Gallob is organizing the event. She said the idea came to her after she discovered tons of trash scattered in an area of the 'dobies where she enjoys running. Appliances, tires, bags of garbage and dead animals, including the carcass of a horse, were among the rubble.

"It's just a good mess," said Gallob. She put a call out on the Facebook message boards and got a good response.

The target area is located on a side road between Bone Mesa and K50 roads off of Crawford Road. Work begins at 8 a.m. Volunteers can come out for an hour or the whole day. Water, trash bags and snacks will be provided, and volunteers should wear good shoes and work gloves and bring sunscreen. A shade tent will also be available.

The BLM will provide a trailer and assist in disposing of the carcass. Volunteers are encouraged to bring trucks in case the trailer gets filled up. If enough people show up and are willing, said Gallob, it's possible they will attempt to clean up more than the one area. In the event of rain the cleanup will be held May 24.
