Dear Editor:

As the wife of a Delta County Ambulance District employee, I would like to thank everyone who recently voted in favor of approving a mill levy for the Delta County Ambulance District (DCAD). Thank you to all the citizens who took time out of your busy schedules to attend the informative meetings presented by Kirby Clock, the DCAD manager. Many who work for DCAD live outside the district (the manager, as well as numerous employees) and could not "help the cause" by casting our vote.

Many times in the past I have been hesitant to affirm a mill levy, but given the fact that in the last 18 years there hasn't been an increase -- despite the continuing increase in expenses -- it truly was not a frivolous request. In fact I want to commend the manager Kirby Clock for cutting expenses in many different areas in order to keep operations going to provide emergency care necessary to the public. And even though we were directly affected by salaries that were cut the last few years, he did everything he could to not have to cut any employees.

Although we live in the North Fork area, many do not realize that your "yes" vote also helps our residents as well. DCAD stands ready to assist the North Fork Ambulance if needed at any time, as well as helping the ER staff at DCMH if they are busy and need extra hands. There are numerous other agencies they assist as well. More information is listed on the website (www.dcadems.com).

I for one can't imagine why anyone would have voted "no" on such an important service. Thank you to all those who made an informed decision, making it possible for all the residents in your area (even those who opposed the measure), to have the care they will need if an emergency arises. Not to mention those travelling through, or coming to visit our beautiful county for recreation. Because emergencies happen, and none of us plan for them. DCAD responded to nearly 3,000 calls last year, an average of seven calls every day; you may be the next one. For those who voted yes, you'll be glad you did! And seeing the wise decisions made by the manager over the last few years, I have no doubt that Kirby will be a good steward of your tax dollars!

As someone who is not affected so much by whether I will have an ambulance available for myself (although you never know, with all the trips we make to Delta), but more as someone whose job would have been greatly affected, we say thank you. To know the EMTs are appreciated makes all those long hours and hard shifts not so hard. We can't thank you enough for the support you have shown!
