Another study has confirmed that 97 percent of climate scientists agree that humans are contributing to global warming. In addition, at the Paris climate conference (COP21) in December 2015, 195 countries adopted the first-ever universal, legally binding global climate deal. The agreement sets out a global action plan to put the world on track to avoid dangerous climate change by limiting global warming to well below 2°C. "Governments agreed to a long-term goal of keeping the increase in global average temperature to well below 2°C above pre-industrial levels."
However, 55 percent of congressional Republicans are climate change deniers, including Scott Tipton, our representative. We also are hearing how major oil, gas and coal companies have known about the effect of fossil fuels on the global climate -- and have chosen to hire people to confuse the issue. These companies are also major monetary contributors to political candidates (especially Republicans).
The Republican party speaks for wealthy corporations and wealthy individuals whose interests are in preserving their profits. We have also seen that the Republicans are politicizing the process of vetting a new Supreme Court justice in an effort to control the makeup of the Supreme Court. If the scientists are correct, if the 195 countries of the world are correct, our world is in trouble and needs action. It is time to work together to rebuild our society so that it is sustainable for our children and grandchildren. Our governments are instrumental in making this change. We must get the climate deniers out of office and soon. It is time for Scott Tipton to go. Gail Schwartz, our former state senator, has announced that she will challenge Mr. Tipton. We now have a great choice to replace Mr. Tipton.
