The Relay For Life, an annual fundraiser for the American Cancer Society, has been cancelled in Delta for 2016, but a couple of alternatives have already surfaced.
The Pondy's team headed by Barb Hladik has collected donations totaling $1,600, which Hladik says will remain with Relay For Life, but now team members have shifted their focus to a local cause.
"The Pondy Cancer Warriors Fighting for Mark Anderson" are finalizing plans for a day-long, 12-hour community walkathon at the CHS athletic track Saturday, July 30, beginning at 9 a.m.
"We hated to give up the Relay For Life," Hladik said, but the date and the location of this year's event were up in the air. "Things just weren't coming together, and since we know someone personally who needs the help, we planned the walkathon."
Like Hladik and her team, Judy Culp has participated in the Relay For Life for several years. She is helping organize a survivors' dinner to be held at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Delta on Saturday, Aug. 27, from 5 to 10 p.m. There is no charge for the dinner, which will be catered by Daveto's. Anyone who attends, whether survivor or caregiver, will receive a T-shirt. For more information or to RSVP, call Judy Culp at 874-2645.
