Former Delta resident George W. "Wes" Gates died Sept 10, 2017, at the VA Medical Center in Grand Junction. He was 91.
Visitation and viewing will be held from 5:30-7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 15, at Taylor Funeral Service Chapel in Delta. A graveside funeral service will be held Saturday, Sept. 16, at 1:30 p.m. at Pea Green Cemetery.
Mr. Gates was born on March 19, 1926, to Jacob and Viola (Marsh) Gates in Elmo, Mo. He spent his childhood in Elmo and graduated from Elmo High School.
On Sept. 6, 1950, he married Anna Ruth Pinckard in Topeka, Kan. To this union, six children were born to join a sister from a previous marriage. They were married 47 years before her death in January 1998.
Mr. Gates served in the U.S. Air Force, was a member of the Montrose Elks Lodge and enjoyed hunting, fishing, fly-tying and bowling.
He is survived by his children, Gary (Sheri) Gates and Larry (Angie) Gates, all of Delta, Terry (Mary) Gates of Albuquerque, N.M., Shirley Schneider of Omaha, Neb., Meri McCartney and Sue (Scott) Weatherford, all of Delta; two brothers, Bob Gates of Montrose and Rex Gates of Omaha, Neb.; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Gates; a daughter, Pat Garcia; and two brothers, Don and Wayne Gates.
