William G. "Bill" Cobai died Aug. 13, 2017. He was 82.
He was born in Crested Butte on June 14, 1935, to Emil and Helen Cobai. After graduating from Crested Butte High School, he served in the U.S. Air Force for one tour of duty. Afterward, he led a distinguished 35-year career with the National Security Agency in Fort Meade, Md., where he garnered many awards and commendations.
While in Maryland, he was instrumental in establishing the Glen Burnine Elks Lodge #2266, eventually serving as the exalted ruler. He enjoyed the camaraderie of his fellow Elks and the lodge's activities, both social and charitable. He was also an avid golfer who liked to competitively decorate his house during Christmastime.
Mr. Cobai returned to Delta after retirement, where he added fishing and spending time with friends to his activities.
He is survived by his daughter, Cindy (Geoffrey Dwight) Cobai; brother, Robert (Carol) Cobai; sisters, Coralie Alvitre, Darlene Halazon and Liz (Rick) Hill; and extended family.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Johnny; brothers-in-law, Fred Halazon and Ernie Alvitre; and a niece.
A private celebration of life gathering will be held at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to Delta Elks Lodge #1235, 563 Main Street, Delta, CO 81416.
