The youth campers at Big Spruce camp on Ute Trail Road, north of Cedaredge, enjoy making a difference in their community. When looking for a service project for this past summer's camp, they decided to help Cathy Meskel of Cedaredge in supporting our active duty military.

Meskel created the Support Our Soldiers (SOS) organization and has spent over 15 years filling boxes with gifts and treats to send to soldiers who are on the front lines for America.

The 14 campers of Big Spruce made 30 packages of gum, candy, granola bars, peanuts, crackers, sunflower seeds and raisins to send to a special unit of 15 Marines. They also filled 15 boxes with socks, toothbrushes, toothpaste and floss, puzzle books, games, deodorant, chapstick and hand wipes. These are all items Cathy said the troops love to receive.

The youth also wrote letters to the Marines describing their lives, families and youth camp.

Please consider joining with groups like the Big Spruce campers by donating items to the SOS. This time of year our soldiers will be in need of wool socks and long johns for the upcoming winter.

If you would like to donate items for troop supply boxes, please contact Cathy Meskel, Support Our Soldiers, at 856-7522.
