The Town of Paonia's governmental affairs and public safety committee (GAPS) will conduct a "Listening session" at 6 p.m. Tuesday, April 16, to hear comments about possible changes to the town building code.
In January, town trustees agreed to consider contracting with its building department contractor. Colorado Code Consulting (CCC), to update its building codes to 2018 codes (see "Paonia considers re-write of its building code" in the Jan. 30 edition of the DCI). The town currently adheres to 2003 editions of international, building, residential and existing building codes.
Before the town commits to the re-write, trustees would like to hear from builders, contractors, architects, homeowners and others who would be affected by the changes, said trustee Dave Knutson at the March 26 board meeting.
Town contract building official Dan Reardon will open the meeting with a short, high-level overview of code changes. Town administrator Ken Knight, along with trustees Sam Hart and Knutson, both of whom serve on the GAPS committee, will be present. Other trustees may also be in attendance.
The GAPS committee plans to use input from the session to present recommendations to the board on the code update and ideas for addressing concerns raised by constituents. The town has until June 28 to decide whether or not to participate with other communities in hiring CCC for the re-write.
