The AC/DC nonprofit has just formed the "AC Theater Group." It will be a permanent group sponsored by the Arts Coalition and will perform three or four plays or musicals each year. Multiple performances of the plays and musicals will be made over a few weeks, starting in April. The group has been in the works for over a year. Officials of the AC/DC are pleased with the number of people who are showing interest in appearing in the plays and musicals as well as all the support people for making costumes, sets and stage management.
The group will function as a part of AC/DC, a nonprofit corporation, organized in 2015. Larry Burson will head the AC Theater Group with Shaun Morgan, a teacher at Delta Middle School. Both will be co-directors for the first two one-act plays to be presented. The two plays will be performed together for a full theater performance and will set up the AC Theater Group to accomplish at least two more performances of new plays this year. AC/DC exists to promote the arts in Delta County and hopes to help all theater groups and other arts programs expand their influence in their own communities and work together.
Founder Richard Weldon says every community in the United States that raises up the arts as a crucial part of its identity has proven that the arts affect everyday living, culture and the economy with very impressive results. "Our goal is to work together to make Delta County a very special place that people will visit rather than just drive through," said Weldon. "With that happening, we will have positive employment and a positive economy."
AC/DC has plans to build the largest performing arts complex on the Western Slope of Colorado, an $8 to $10 million building project. A Delta area business has offered to provide 15-20 acres of land free to build the facility at that location. Within the next year, Weldon said AC/DC will be looking at adding a dance program as part of a five-year plan to build the program.
The theater group will register all ages who are interested; actors will be contacted when acting parts are open or when help is needed with performances. There is no cost to register.
