Groundbreaking kicks off DMS construction

Delta Middle School students settled comfortably beneath the trees in the open grassy space just south of the seventh-eighth grade wing for a groundbreaking ceremony Monday afternoon. This spot will soon be fenced off, as the sixth grade wing is demolished and a new two-story structure begins to take shape.



Cedaredge track teams finish third

There weren't a lot of first-place finishes for the Bruins in either the girls or boys division at last Saturday's Cedaredge Bruin Invitational track meet. Both teams, however, scored enough points to finish third in their divisions.

Delta wins Region 7 title

Delta's Panthers had an uneasy beginning to its baseball season losing five of the first eight games played, including losses to 2A powerhouse Paonia, 4A Erie, 5A Montrose, and a double header event against 4A Roosevelt. Since those first eight games the Panthers have lost once (to Paonia) in the last 13 games.

Firor sets hurdles mark

At the May 11 Cedaredge Bruin Invitational, Hotchkiss junior Kaiya Firor re-set the meet record in the 300-meter hurdles with a season-best time of 45.5 seconds.

The defending state 2A champion in the 300 hurdles, Firor's performance took more than a second off of the 2013 record of 46.17 seconds held by Abi Grace McGee of Montrose.

Hotchkiss, Paonia moving on

After defeating rival Paonia by a single run in conference play, Hotchkiss (17-3) was seeded first heading into Saturday's district baseball tournament at Hubbard Field in Olathe; Paonia (19-2) was seeded second. Both teams won their respective semifinal game in five innings.

Paonia girls first at Cedaredge track meet

In the final state qualifying track meet of the season the Paonia girls scored 141 points to win the 11-team Cedaredge Bruin Invitational.

Brooke Hillman won the 800m in a season-best time of 2:27.83.

Stock dog competition was 'exceptional'

Handlers traveled from California, Utah, Montana, Arizona, Texas, Wyoming, North Dakota and other parts of the state to take part in the 15th annual Hotchkiss Sheep Camp Stock Dog Trials.

Over three days of competition, the handlers worked with the dogs to herd small groups of sheep through a course laid out in a pasture owned by the Hotchkiss family.

Stained glass panel installed at arts center

It was an historic day for the Grand Mesa Arts and Events Center when workers installed a colorful stained glass panel on May 3. The panel is now permanently in place over the building's main entrance at the intersection of SW 2nd and West Main Street in downtown Cedaredge.
