Cedaredge High School's wrestling team was impressive in its first action of the season at the Maverick Duals on the campus of CMU. The Bruins went 4-1 in a day-long endurance test with wins over Montezuma-Cortez 48-23, Moffat County 42-35, Bayfield 66-14 and Olathe 54-21.
Grand Junction High School (365) out-paddled the Durango swim team (347) to win last Friday's Delta Invitational at Bill Heddles Recreation Center. Fruita finished third (249) with Gunnison placing fourth (217), Moffat County fifth (146) and host Delta sixth with 47 points.
The Paonia Eagles opened the basketball season at 2-0 and with a new head coach. Tim Esgar replaces Chase Roeber, a PHS graduate who stepped down last spring after seven seasons.
Roeber had a 125-54 win-loss record and two state appearances.
Russell Coleman began his basketball tenure at Cedaredge High School last year as the junior varsity coach for Cedaredge High School's girls program. Coleman begins his varsity coaching experience for the Bruins with 11 letter winners from last season's 21-4 team on this year's roster and has plenty of reason to be excited for the 2018-19 season.
Hotchkiss opened the season at home with a 69-19 win over Nucla. With a three-point buzzer shot by Will Scarlett to end the half, the Bulldogs held a comfortable 41-11 lead.

Maxine June Gilchrist Keller, known to friends as Micki, passed away on Monday, Nov. 26, 2018, at age 75.
Born July 2, 1943, in Galveston, Texas, Micki graduated from Mapleton High School in Thornton, Colo., in 1960.

The Town of Paonia will purchase a liquid spreader for spreading a sand/magnesium chloride mix in three key areas of town. Purchase of the $3,000 spreader was approved with the 2019 town budget.
