Cedaredge is staying the course against tough competition in the rugged 3A WSL. The Bruins have had their difficulty in boys basketball this season as a young squad seeks its identity with just three seniors and two juniors. After last week's games the Bruins are near the bottom of league standings with a 5-8 overall record and an 0-3 league mark.

The Bruins began the week against visiting Rangely on Tuesday, Jan. 22, with a 52-44 win. Friday's trip to Basalt resulted in a 52-30 loss to the Longhorns and Saturday's game against Gunnison was a 59-26 setback.

Bruins 52, Rangely 44

Tuesday's contest against Rangely got off to a good start for the Bruins. A 17-12 lead after one period changed dramatically when Rangely outscored the Bruins 15-6 to take a 27-23 halftime lead.

Cedaredge corrected parts of its game to take a 43-37 lead to the fourth quarter following a 20-point third. The Bruins were five points better than the Panthers in the fourth quarter to earn the 52-44 non-conference victory.

Senior Peter Sandels was Cedaredge's leading scorer with 13 points followed by sophomore Conner Brooks' 12. Sophomores Colby Rupp and Jacob Brown contributed nine points each with senior Jared Reynolds scoring eight points with six assists and six steals.

Sophomore Alex Barron had eight rebounds for the Bruins in the win.

Micah Zenner had 13 points to lead Rangely's offense.

Basalt 52, Bruins 30

Cedaredge found the Longhorn's gym to be a tough place to play last Friday. A consistent game from Basalt led to a 22-point loss for the Bruins in 3A WSL play.

Brown and Reynolds were Cedaredge's leading scorers with eight points each, with juniors Owen Craig and Sandels pulling down seven rebounds apiece in the loss.

Cowboys 59, Bruins 26

A well-conditioned Gunnison team used its length and quickness to good advantage with an aggressive style of play.

The game was close for the first eight minutes with the Cowboys easing into the second quarter with a 13-10 lead.

In the second quarter, however, the wheels quite literally came off the wagon in a 21-6 surge by the Cowboys.

Gunnison kept the pressure on in second half play with a 16-7 third quarter insuring the Cowboys of a 3A WSL win, 59-26.

Reynolds' 13 points topped the Bruin players on offense. Reynolds also had four rebounds and six steals in the game.

Cedaredge hosted Delta (4-0 and 9-4) on Jan. 29 and travels to New Castle for a 3A WSL matchup with Coal Ridge (2-3 and 11-3) on Saturday (2 p.m.). The Bruins are in Aspen Feb. 5 for a 7 p.m. contest.
