It's been a terrific start for Ryan Hilbig and his Cedaredge High School Bruins basketball team. The Bruins are currently unbeaten at 5-0.
Cedaredge concluded its 2015 portion of this year's regular season schedule with Basalt's Longhorns in town last Saturday, Dec. 19. The Bruins picked up right where they left off the previous week with a solid defense and a running game that produced a 65-22 win.
Nellie Freeman was hot, offensively, to start the game with 12 points in the first quarter. The Bruins established themselves as roadrunners from the opening tip and raced to a 21-8 lead going to the second quarter.
Second-quarter play was basically the same with the Bruins controlling the game tempo with another 16 points on offense and limiting Basalt to eight points on offense. Hailey Henrie led the way for Cedaredge with seven points in the period.
With a 37-16 lead at the half, the Bruins played everyone on their bench liberally.
Cedaredge was too powerful for the Longhorns in second-half action and outscored them 28-6 to post its 65-22 win.
Freeman finished the game with 22 points and Henrie had another 14. Nicole Alvarado was Basalt's leading scorer with nine points.
When play resumes following winter break the Bruins will host Meeker on Jan. 8 with games beginning at 3 p.m.
On Jan. 9 Cedaredge is in Rangely for a 1 p.m. tipoff with the Panthers.
