Cedaredge's Bruins will be sending seven wrestlers to this week's state tournament in Denver at the Pepsi Center.
Overall, the Bruins finished fifth in the 14-team Region 1 tournament held at Colorado Mesa University last weekend. Cedaredge scored 149 points while Hotchkiss topped all teams with 226 points. Paonia (216.5), Meeker (205) and Norwood/Nucla finished with 189 points to round out the top five teams.
Cedaredge did not have any first-place finishes but did have three wrestlers vying for first-place honors. At 113 pounds, Alex McCracken (22-17) fell, by pinfall, 4:32, to Dolores' Brandon Ward in the title match. Zach Anderson ran into a buzz-saw in Meeker's TJ Shelton at 170 pounds. Shelton handed Anderson his 11th loss of the season with a technical fall at 5:39 of the title match. Mario Madaleno, 21-8, had an excellent contest against Meeker's Tyler Ilgen, but in the end lost, 3-2, to place second.
A trio of third-place finishes began with 126-pounder Jake Ostrom moving to the semifinal round before losing to eventual winner Sackett Chesnik and falling into the consolation bracket. In the consolation bracket, Ostrom defeated Dolores' Austin Hackney and then decisioned Meeker's Tanen Kennedy, 5-3, to place third in the tournament.
At 138, Colton Hoerr lost to Aiden Dabal of Norwood/Nucla and was sent to the consolation bracket. Once in the consolation bracket Hoerr advanced to the third-place match after a forfeit-win over Dolores' Logan Fuller. Hoerr scored a major decision, 13-3, over Paonia's Clay Campbell to place third.
Tré LaBossiere advanced, with two byes, to the semifinal round where Paonia's Trevor Smith survived a supreme test against LaBossiere with a 5-3 sudden victory in the first period. A win over Mancos' Everett Whalen, in the consolation semis, sent LaBossiere to the final round and a pinfall (1:24) over Hotchkiss' Devin Curtis for third place.
In the 182-pound division, Landon Eckhart lost to Paonia's Jaden Miller in a third-place match. Eckhart was challenged to a wrestleback by Norwood/Nucla's Dalton Lampshire, whom Eckhart had defeated in the quarterfinals.
Eckhart was able to defeat Lampshire for the second time during the tournament to earn fourth place and his trip to state.
