Cedaredge's day began with a few snow flakes and cold temperatures against Basalt last Saturday. The Longhorns arrived late, pushing the 11 a.m. starting time back a bit.
Some blustery wind and scattered snow kept players and fans in jackets and under blankets for much of the early innings.
Basalt scored its first run in the first inning following a Jake Reardon walk and a single, sandwiched between strikeouts by Dusty Imhoff.
The Bruins started their half of the first inning with a double off the bat of senior Kaden Schulz. Sean Dale's sacrifice fly to left field scored Schulz for a tie (1-1) heading to the second inning.
Imhoff walked the first two Longhorns he faced in the second inning, and both scored on a Reardon single. Two more walks in the inning, and a two RBIs single cleared the bases before the Bruins recorded the final out on a grounder to third.
Cedaredge went quietly in the next two innings before rallying for two runs in the bottom of the fourth and cutting Basalt's lead to 5-2.
Neither team scored in the fifth and the Bruins' defense kept Roaring Fork from scoring in the top of the fifth.
Cedaredge found its bats in the bottom of the fifth and the Bruins erupted for 12 big runs for a 15-5 win after five innings of play.
Schulz was Cedaredge's top batter with three hits, including a double and four RBIs. Schulz also scored twice in the game.
Trey Geyer had two doubles in the game, scored twice himself and knocked in three runs for the Bruins. Dale had a double in his two-hit day, scored twice and drove in two runs.
After Imhoff's start on the mound for Cedaredge, Simon Varela came on in the fourth to work an inning and two-thirds before giving way to Geyer, who finished the game, and picked up the win. Geyer worked three innings, allowed no runs, no hits and struck out six Longhorns.
Cedaredge moved to 5-10 and 1-0 in 3A WSL play following the win. Basalt fell to 0-6 and 0-1.
The Bruins hosted Delta on April 16 and are scheduled to play in Carbondale (Roaring Fork) on Saturday, April 20, at 11 a.m.
Schulz and Emig lead the Bruins with 15 RBIs each with Dale leading in stolen bases with 10 for the season. Dale is also the top batter for Cedaredge with a .387 average, followed by Geyer (.320) and Emig and Schulz with .303 averages.
