Cedaredge High School's baseball team played three games in La Junta last week. A big third inning cost the Bruins in a 9-8 loss to the Tigers. The Bruins' biggest loss over the weekend was to Sterling, 14-3. A third loss, 3-1, came against Lamar.
Against La Junta Cedaredge owned a 4-2 lead entering the third inning. A seven-run third boosted the Tiger's lead to 9-4.
A defensive fourth and fifth inning left zeroes on the scoreboard for both teams. Cedaredge tallied four runs in the top of the sixth to end scoring in the game giving the Tigers the 9-8 win.
Kaden Schulz led the Bruins offense with a home run in three at bats to produce four RBIs. Dusty Emig and Jacob Brown had doubles and an RBI each in the loss and Sean Dale and Trey Geyer had two hits each in the game.
Cedaredge's next game was with Sterling. A nine-run first inning lifted the Tigers to a 9-2 lead that was never threatened. Another four runs by the end of the third inning made the score 13-3. One more run in the fourth ended the game after five innings, 14-3.
The final game of the week for the Bruins was a defensive battle. Lamar scored once in the first and added two more runs in the sixth after Cedaredge had plated a single run in the top of the inning to make the final score 3-1.
Cedaredge coach Terry Montoya remained positive after the weekend. "We committed a lot of errors, but we outhit both La Junta and Lamar and should have beaten them both. We had chances to win both."
Going on, Montoya explained a bit of the makeup of his team. "We have five guys who are playing as first-time varsity starters. We have to realize that we do belong with some of the toughest teams in 3A. The most important thing is that they are getting better every time we go out there. So, if we just keep getting better and keep gaining trust in each other, we might just come together at the right time. We're living by "it's not how you start, it's how you finish."
Cedaredge hosts Hotchkiss April 3 at 4 p.m. and plays in Eaton April 5 at 5 p.m.
