Despite out-shooting their opponents in two quarters and scoring 21 points from the three line, the Hotchkiss Bulldogs came up short Friday in their 69-58 conference loss to the Vail Christian Saints.
A strong first-half gave the Saints a 32-20 halftime lead. With three minutes remaining in the half the Bulldogs trailed, 27-12. In the final two minutes, junior Hunter Bryant stepped up to the three line for six points and Will Scarlett added a goal with seconds remaining on the clock.
Hotchkiss trailed, 33-20, at the half. The Saints contained Bulldogs center Jacob Stucker, holding him scoreless the final three periods. Stucker, who scored all 10 of the team's first-quarter points, was in foul trouble early in the game, and fouled out less than three minutes into the final period with Hotchkiss trailing by seven.
Saints senior Zach McKeever scored a game-high 20 points. Vail Christian remains undefeated in the 2A/1A Western Slope League.
On Saturday, Stucker scored a career-high 25 points -- 12 goals and a free throw -- in the Bulldogs' 71-61 conference win at Vail Mountain. The Bulldogs scored 11 of 17 points on free throws.
One of 11 players to score two or more points in the game, junior Will Scarlett scored six of his eight points from the three line.
The Bulldogs have one game on tap this week. At 5:30 p.m. Saturday, they host Rangely (1-8, 1-2, 2A Western Slope League).
