Hotchkiss High School's basketball teams won three of four games played last weekend. The girls defeated West Grand 54-42 and fell to North Park 43-33 in 2A District 5 play. The boys were winners in both games, 60-51 over West Grand and 75-25 over North Park.
HHS 54, WGHS 42
Friday's game against West Grand (2-8, 3-15) was nip and tuck for three quarters. Each team had 19 points at halftime.
The Bulldogs had an edge in the second half with a 20-point third quarter and 15 more in the final stanza. West Grand 15 in the third and eight in the fourth to make the final score 54-42.
Carson Collins finished the game with 14 points for the Bulldogs and Shay Glaser added 11 in a losing cause. Kaliegh Little had nine rebounds to lead Hotchkiss in that department. Elsie Vazquez had five rebounds, three assists and four steals to go with five points.
NP 43, Hotchkiss 33
The Wildcats (5-5, 12-5; 2A/1A Western Slope) had too much offense for the Bulldogs and ended the first half with a 26-18 lead.
An even offensive second half hurt the Bulldogs with the Wildcats clawing their way to a 20-7 first quarter which provided a cushion the Bulldogs could not reduce in three quarters of play.
Collins (10 points), Glaser (11 points) and Vazquez's nine points furnished most of the offense for the Bulldogs in the game.
Hotchkiss (4-6, 8-9) ends its regular season at home with Vail Christian Feb. 16 at 6 p.m.
HHS 60, WGHS 51
Hotchkiss scored double figures in all four quarters on its way to the nine-point conference win over West Grand's Mustangs in Kremmling.
A four-point lead after one period grew to six after three quarters of play.
Each team found more offense in the fourth quarter with the Bulldogs putting up 24 points and the Mustangs 21.
Sam Rodriguez and Braxton Trujillo keyed the 24-point fourth quarter with 10 and seven points, respectively. Rodriguez's 10 points included eight of 10 shooting at the free throw line.
Trujillo's 12 points led Hotchkiss scorers with Rodriguez's 10 next high. Eli Kirk finished with nine and Jacob Stucker had eight in the win.
Jake Butler's 15 points topped West Grand scorers and Luis Dominguez had nine counters. The Mustangs are 5-6 and 8-10 in 2017-18.
HHS 75, NP 25
Hotchkiss wasted no time in establishing who was in charge in Walden. A 23-4 first quarter set the tempo for the Bulldogs.
Hotchkiss' defense blanked North Park in the second quarter while its offense tallied another 16 points to take a 39-4 lead to halftime.
A 36-21 second half for the Bulldogs made the final score 75-25.
Hotchkiss' Jonathan Gonzalez had eight points in the Bulldogs' 23-point first quarter and finished with five threes in the game. Gonzalez had 17 points for the Bulldogs and Jacob Palecki finished with eight points.
Bryce Carlstrom's nine points were high for the Wildcats.
Hotchkiss (7-3, 11-6) will conclude its regular schedule with Vail Christian (9-2, 14-3) in town for a 7:30 p.m. game on Feb. 16.
District play begins the week of Feb. 19 with pigtail games hosted by higher seeds scheduled for Feb. 19-22 followed by district finals Feb. 23-24.
