In a close game that went into an extra inning, the Hotchkiss Bulldogs defeated the visiting Cedaredge Bruins last Wednesday, 5-4.

Hotchkiss scored three runs on two hits in the opening inning. Presley Pene scored the opening run from second on a hit to left field by Eli Kirk. Jamison Yanish, who was 2 for 4 on the day, opened with a double, and scored on a base hit by Jesus Macias.

Neither team found a hit in the second inning. Pene struck out the first Bruin and with the bases loaded, struck out two more to end the inning. In the bottom of the second, Bruins pitcher Dusty Emig struck out two and the inning ended on a fly out at first base.

With two outs in the bottom of the third, the Bulldogs took a 4-1 lead, with Yanish scoring on a hit by Jonathan Gonzalez. With the bases loaded, Emig ended the inning on a K.

The Bruins got on the scoreboard in the third. Pene struck out Pedro Madaleno before walking Trey Geyer and Sean Dale. Pete Carlson, who was 3 for 5 and batted .600 for the day, brought Geyer in from second base on a single.

The Bruins scored three runs on three hits in the sixth inning. With one out, Geyer hit a single line drive into left field, Dale singled on a line drive past short stop, and Carlson brought Geyer home on a line drive past second. After a Bulldog timeout, Carlson scored a run on a sacrifice fly ball by Colton Hoerr to tie the game at 4-4.

In the top of the seventh, Eli Kirk retired three batters, but the Bulldogs were unable to capitalize in the bottom of the inning and left runners on second and third.

In the top of the eighth inning, Kirk caught an infield fly and struck out two batters, leaving a Bruin runner stranded on second.

Pene led off in the bottom of the eighth with a line drive single to right field. Kirk also hit a base hit line drive to right field, and Pene advanced to third on a sacrifice hit by Gonzalez. With one out, the Bruins intentionally walked Yanish. With the bases loaded, Marvin Guereque hit a walk-off sacrifice fly, with Pene scoring the final run.

Carlson was 3 for 5 with two RBIs and one stolen base for the Bruins, and Brayden Blair was 1 for 4 with a double.

Bulldogs Pene, Kirk and Gonzalez were 2 for 5, and Yanish was 2 for 4. Macias was 1 for 3 with two RBIs. On the mound, Pene, Gonzalez, Kirk and Yanish each pitched two innings, combining for 18 Ks, five walks, three errors and three earned runs.

Hotchkiss hosts Delta (5-5, 3-0, 3A WSL) at 4 p.m. today. On Saturday it continues conference play against Dolores and Ignacio. Both games will be held at Ignacio.

The Bulldogs were scheduled to open district play Saturday at Meeker, but the doubleheader was rained out and the trip canceled, said head coach Blake Carlquist. The games will be rescheduled.
